A call to action…

MUUS & Company’s dedicated climate investment arm invests across the capital stack of decarbonization and industrial efficiency. Michael and his family have been allocating philanthropic, political, and investment capital to climate-related activities for over 30 years, and in the 1980’s, Michael was among the earliest investors in renewable energy. He helped launch the solar lighting and solar signaling companies Solar Outdoor Lighting (SOL) and publicly traded Carmanah Technologies, chairing Carmanah and merging the two companies before exiting in 2017.

Growing concern about climate change compelled MUUS to launch a dedicated practice in 2016 to invest in, support, facilitate, and accelerate the decarbonization of our planet alongside adaptation strategies. We embrace our responsibility to preserve a livable climate, and we seek to generate returns that attract further investment in this thesis. We envision an accelerating transition to more sustainable thinking, practices, and technologies, which are necessary for a productive economy, thriving environment, and stable society.

The Goldman-Sonnenfeldt Foundation, the family’s philanthropic arm, has also led major environmental initiatives, focused on accelerating adoption of solutions and influencing policies that will help preserve a livable climate.

Our Climate Portfolio

  • MUUS makes climate investments at the convergence of tech and decarbonization, focusing on technologies that have the most carbon reduction potential. We believe that the best opportunities to mitigate climate change not only help reduce carbon emissions, but improve our fundamental industrial, digital, and physical capabilities.

  • The MUUS climate portfolio includes 30+ companies working across numerous industries requiring decarbonization. Select investments include novel technologies to generate electricity using the power of deep-sea waves, or reduce construction weight and carbon intensity by replacing steel with highly engineered “super-wood,” among others.

  • MUUS’s diverse and entrepreneurial team has built new ventures, advanced climate policy and led corporate initiatives around decarbonization. Our combined decades of climate leadership and broad network enable us to identify and support winning climate software and hardware solutions.

  • Despite headwinds in the clean tech and renewables industry due to backsliding domestic policy, MUUS remains deeply committed to investing in both proven and emerging technologies with the potential to mitigate the dangers of carbon emissions to public and environmental health.

“We began, in earnest, building our climate portfolio over a decade ago, because advancing climate solutions is the work we are called to do, and represents the investment opportunity of a lifetime.”
